Moving towards globalisation of the exhibition market

Annually Russia holds nearly 1,000 congress and exhibition events of various profiles with total area of more than 2 million square meters net hosting companies from 135 countries from throughout the world.

This statistics was presented by Lyudmila Smorodova, RUEF Executive Director at the session ”Exhibition industry: market overview, new trends and perspectives of industry development. How to stay competitive in the modern market.” In her opinion, the numbers are quite positive, but the results of 2014 demonstrate – to some extent -decline in the industry development on the basis of a range of criteria. First of all, we witness the decline in the activity of market participants and the reduction of number of congress and exhibition participants in general. For the first 9 months of the previous year the number of foreign participants decreased by 4% and we also observe alarming 7% decline in the number of Russian participants. It is necessary to mention that import – dependent industries were affected by the recession most of all – these are safety, information and mechanical engineering.

According to experts, it is necessary to pass from words to deeds today. It is necessary to move towards globalisation, develop IT and essentially change the approach to event organisation. To contribute to the industry development throughout Russia, industry-related associations and unions shall get actively involved in the process. In this regard the heads of RUEF are going to hold a large-scale meeting with representatives of such industry-related organisations in March 2015. "It is vitally important to support small and medium businesses,” claimed Lyudmila Smorodova. “While St. Petersburg is provided nearly 5 million rubles a year for this support and it isn't enough, other regions of the country do not get even such funding. Only by means of new forms and methods it is possible to raise efficiency of exhibition and congress and exhibition and fair events."

All participants of the session made the decision to move towards the common goals and dedicate the coming session of RUEF members in summer 2015 to the work under new economic conditions and their first results.
